To Supplement or Not to Supplement

  That is the Question!

The dietary supplement industry is second only to the pharmaceutical industry when it comes to pushing pills. Your doctor will often prescribe a pill for this, a drug for that and seldom focus on the detrimental and potential deadly side effects of the medication (you have to watch a TV commercial for that!). Your druggist will always provide a written description of the drug and often will offer to explain potential side effects. Seldom if ever will they discuss potential drug interactions with either prescribed medications or over the counter drugs you may be taking. That can often present a Deadly Problem, so be cautious!


Then there are the vitamins and other 'food' supplements. The industry is massive. Just walk down the grocery/pharmacy isle. Go to a local vitamin shop, or drug store. There are hundreds, no Thousands of supplements, vitamins and all sorts of stuff marketed to help make you healthy.


So do you need the drugs? Do you need the supplements? What about the Vitamins?


Prescription Drugs


Like I have said previously, we are NOT medical or pharmacological practitioners. (have to say that!). That being said, there are often good reasons to take some of these things. If you do have a medial condition, by all means take the prescription drugs that you doctor prescribes. You can still question the efficacy, interaction and effectiveness of the prescribed medications!


Many people who stick to a Whole Food Plant Based diet and lifestyle, begin to regain their natural health and rebuild their immune systems such that they no longer need many of the mediation previously prescribed. That includes insulin for diabetes two patients, those suffering from arthritis and high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more. Always check with your doctor to see if you can reduce or eliminate your current drug regime.




Supplements come in such a wide variety and purpose, it is difficult to even count how many and whether they are effective, actually good for you or even needed at all. You can ask your doctor, but they will probably not know what you are talking about as it is impossible for anyone to understand all the stuff that is out there. In general, if you are eating a whole food plant based diet and living a corresponding lifestyle, you probably do NOT need supplements.


We do take several suppliments, more as an 'insurance policy' rather than a need.  But better save than sorry.  Then again, we do a lot of hiking and get some strains and pulls when exercising.  Suppliments can help overcome these minor aches and pains.  Then there are those who are battling deadly diseases like cancer.  For those (and I speak from experience) suppliments can provide that extra healing boost that will help fight disease and heal your body faster.

  Nutritional Suppliment

Some of the powdered supplements are sold as sources of protein. You can get all the protein your body needs (even for extreme athletes) from natural plant protein without resorting to powdered protein that is often full of whey (a discard from cheese making they had to do something with it!).  There are many good sources of Plant Protein, Vitamins and Minerals if you like to suppliment your diet. Added to smoothies or juices (fresh) they can add essential nutrients for those on the go, fighting illness or as meal replacements for those 'on the go'.  The one we currently suggest and use, almost daily is:

In addition, many people just don't get enough of healthy fats in their diets.  Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that can be beneficial to your health.   Vitamin and Suppliments


Now to vitamins. We ALL need vitamins but mostly they come from the FOOD you consume; if you are eating a healthy diet! Getting your vitamins, amino acids and minerals and the rest is ALWAYS best to receive them naturally with the high fiber a plant based diet provides.


That being said, much of our land has been depleted from over-farming and extremely poor practices of mono-farming (where the same crop is grown in the same ground year after year). The massive use of non-organic chemical fertilizers make the plants look good but cannot in any way provide the same nutrient complex of a good healthy soil. Pesticides, used in massive amounts with GMO farming just make matters worse.


So, to insure that you DO get the best available mix of vitamins, minerals and such, it is a good idea to take a supplemental vitamin complex. Vitamin B12 is a necessary vitamin missing in strictly plant based diets; except for supplemental enrichment of many plant-based foods. In fact, most animal foods, that used to contain this essential vitamin no longer do; because of the nature of factory farming techniques that feed animals an unnatural feed devoid of the dirt and bacteria they would otherwise consume in a natural habitat (B12 is created by organisms in the soil, NOT by the animal).


There are so many vitamin supplements on the market it is difficult to figure out which one to take. Your doctor will probably tell you just to take a 'multivitamin' and be done with it. But not all vitamins are the same.
